Shavuot Bingo Night for Low Income Seniors - (5/13/2013)

Come on all your Bingo-birds! Join MoHo in helping facilitate a bingo night for lonely, low-income seniors in Brooklyn! In honor of Shavuot, with discussion to follow about themes of social justice in the Shavuot story. RSVP to mohoparkslope@gmail.com. Kosher dinner will be served! In partnership w/the Met Council of NY. Program Sneak Preview: Volunteers facilitate a game of bingo, by taking turns selecting the balls and shouting out the letter-number combinations, keeping track of the balls already drawn, and socializing with the clients. Impact: Senior citizens who live independently are at great risk of social isolation and this program was made to serve as a fun way of staving off such a risk. This program fosters community building, facilitates social interactions among the clients, and is just downright fun! Clients Served: Clients are low-income senior residents that live in Met Council-owned and operated housing sites. The intent of our senior housing program is to integrate low-income housing into the very area in which it would not ordinarily be economically viable. This program also allows seniors to remain in their community, so that they can continue to be surrounded by their friends, doctors, and relatives. Met Council has devoted these buildings entirely and exclusively to senior citizens, 62 and older.

Shavuot Poetry Workshop - (5/7/2013)

Join MoHo Park Slope in celebrating Shavuot with a poetry workshop led by award-winning poet Elana Bell! The class will allow us to examine experiences of joy and sorrow, and will reflect on our own modern day personal relationships with the divine, however we might define it. We anticipate having a full house given the success of Elana's Passover poetry workshop, so please RSVP as soon as possible to guarantee your spot! Wine, cheese, and snacks will be served. CLASS DESCRIPTION As human beings our lives are made up of so much joy and also sadness. Often, in the moments of sadness or suffering, we feel like we are alone. Shavuot celebrates the receiving of the Torah, and reminds us we are not alone- giving us a chance to reflect on our own relationship with "the divine," however we might experience that connection. In this creative writing workshop we will look at writing that explores these themes, from King David to Rilke, and create our own pieces on this theme. This is a generative workshop--no prior experience necessary! ABOUT ELANA BELL Elana’s first collection of poetry, Eyes, Stones (LSU Press 2012) is the winner of the 2011 Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. Elana is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Jerome Foundation, the Edward Albee Foundation, the AROHO Foundation, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Drisha Institute. Her work has recently appeared in Harvard Review, Massachusetts Review, CALYX Journal, and elsewhere. Elana has led creative writing workshops for women in prison, for educators, for high school students in Israel, Palestine and throughout the five boroughs of New York City, as well as for the pioneering peace building and leadership organization, Seeds of Peace. She is currently the writer-in-residence for the Bronx Academy of Letters and poetry editor for the Jewish Journal. Elana resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Religious Pluralism 101 with Hechalutz - (1/15/2013)

Moishe House will be partnering with New Generations, the New Israel Fund’s (NIF) community of young professionals and activists in their 20s and 30s, to welcome Israeli non-profit organization Hechalutz to New York! Hechalutz is an Israeli education center dedicated to educating towards Cultural Judaism for Diaspora Jews. The organization aims to connect Diaspora Jews to Israel by educating towards Zionist ideals of self-determination, collective and personal responsibility, democracy and justice. Its alternative style of education is based on dialogical learning and encourages critical thinking and challenging of participants’ perceptions. The MoHo/NIF program will involve an interactive, text-based approach to understanding the American Jewish community’s relationship to the topic of religious pluralism in Israel. Hechalutz educators will drive a conversation that explains what religious pluralism looks like in Israel and that explores the threats to religious freedom that exist. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of the role they play in ensuring that religious freedom is present in their lives at home and continues to exist at the heart of Israeli society.

The two women’s lives hastily intertwine, and together, they attempt to stand up against their different yet similarly predetermined destinies. The film was screened at New York’s Other Israel Film Festival this fall, and is sure to evoke interesting dialogue about the intersection of cultures and the many different meanings of the theme of the “Other.”

FEAST!! - (1/21/2012)

FEAST (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics) is a recurring public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging art makers. At each FEAST, patrons give a $20 donation for which they receive supper and a ballot. Diners spend the evening reviewing a series of project proposals and conversing with the artists behind each idea. Attendees cast a vote for their favorite proposal, and by the end of the night, the artist who garners the most votes is awarded a grant comprised of that evening’s door money. Since 2009, FEAST Brooklyn has produced 12 dinners, funded 30 projects, and awarded $19,656. Meanwhile, similar models have emerged all over the country, resulting in a network of organizations committed to rethinking how art is financed and communally experienced.
