Bringing Ukrainian Culture
resources and ideas for impactful programing
By Yulia Bezrukova, Global RSJ Jewish Educator
It’s hard to believe that we are getting close to the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine. February 24th will forever be a tragic day for all Ukrainians around the world. With two very different wars affecting the global Moishe House community right now, we are faced with oddly similar questions: Where can we be safe? Will I be the same after this? What my response will my response be and how will my life change?
The same way as Ahad Ha’am says “More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews”, we are keeping knowledge of our culture and rituals, so they can help us cope and keep the unique parts of our identities whole and untouched by challenging realities.
We are all culture keepers of some sorts, and being a Ukrainian Jew myself I am blessed with cultural gems from both worlds. So, I am here today to invite you to honor your fellow Ukrainian Moishe House community leaders and members by learning about Ukrainian culture and bringing it to your communities
No matter how you decide to highlight Ukrainian culture, please know it has a tremendous impact for everyone affected by the war in Ukraine. Feeling we have the support of our global Moishe House family is very valuable, especially to the community builders in Ukraine.
Shabbat Add-Ons:
- Put a bouquet of sunflowers at your Shabbat table. Sunflower is an official flower of Ukraine and it symbolizes peace.
- Use these Ukrainian style patterned Shabbat Brachot cards from Moishe House and share why you chose to use them.
- Learn more about why Challah and Ukrainian Korovai are not that different.
Ukrainian Culture Gems:
- Learn about traditional Ukrainian superstitions – knocking on wood and never throwing garbage away after sunset are only the a tip of the iceberg!, And the funny part is – one third of all Ukrainians believe in them today.
- Enjoy some Jewish Ukrainian food – organize a culinary workshop or order in local Ukrainian restaurant! Here are some recipes.
- Read the English translation of Lesya Ukrainka’s poem “Contra Spem Spero!” and discuss the topics of freedom, resilience and love.
Yellow and Blue:
- Have guests where yellow and blue to your program. Show your support towards Ukrainians and tell community members what these colors represent in Ukraine.
- Print this poster with different facts about Ukraine and it’s symbols. Place it somewhere everyone will see it in your house – help your guests learn more about Ukraine. –
Tikkun Olam for Ukraine:
- Spread the word about local organizations supporting Ukraine and/or invite their representatives to speak at your event.
- Residents and hosts: Apply for a Tikkun Olam grant and use one of our Tikkun Olam program ideas.
Residents and Hosts: Are you looking for additional support for your programs? Check out our grant opportunities here or reach out to your Community Manager or Program Specialist for assistance!
